Let $(X,\tau)$ be a topological space. We say that $(X,\tau)$ is $\sigma$-compact provided that there is a countable set $\{C_1,C_2,\ldots\}$ of compact subsets of $X$ such that $X=\displaystyle\bigcup_{k=1}^{\infty} C_k$.
